Walking Therapy: Moving, Talking, and Finding Perspective

The sun is just peeking through the clouds, a light breeze ruffles your hair, and your footsteps crunch on the path ahead. You’re talking about something that’s been weighing on you — but somehow, out here, it doesn’t feel quite so heavy. That’s the idea behind walking therapy: a chance to explore your thoughts and feelings while moving through the world, side-by-side, at your own pace.

Walking therapy is just that: a counselling session held outdoors, at a pace and distance that feels comfortable for you. We might stroll through a park, along quiet streets, or by the water — wherever feels safe and calming. Sessions can be tailored, making them accessible even if you have limited mobility or don’t usually get outside much. Some clients find that simply being outdoors for a little while can lift their mood and open up space to think.

One client told me they felt “stuck” talking about a big life change, but once we started walking, it was as if the movement unlocked something. They described noticing the breeze, the trees, even the crunch of leaves underfoot — and suddenly, the conversation started to move too.

Another said they liked walking therapy because it felt less formal. “I don’t feel like I’m being ‘examined’,” they said. “I can just talk, or even pause and watch the world around me. Somehow that makes it easier to think clearly.”

Why Walking Therapy Can Help

  • Fresh perspective: Moving through space often mirrors shifting perspectives in thought — things that felt heavy in a room sometimes feel lighter outside.

  • Openness and ease: Walking side-by-side can make difficult conversations feel less intense.

  • Mindfulness in motion: Feeling your body move, noticing nature, and listening to your surroundings can bring calm and focus.

  • Accessible for everyone: You don't have to go far, or fast, you can stop and sit on a bench, this makes walking therapy a great way to get outside even for those with limited mobility or who don’t usually go outdoors.

  • Boosts wellbeing: A gentle walk supports both physical and mental health, helping release stress and tension.

Things to Know Before You Walk

  • Weather happens: Sessions go ahead rain or shine. Sometimes a drizzle or a gust of wind can bring a new perspective on how things feel. Bring a brolly or wellies just in case!

  • Safe, accessible routes: There a various options, we can talk through these and decide which one suits you best.

  • Pace yourself: We walk at a pace that feels right, and it’s fine to pause, sit, or change direction if you need.

  • Dress comfortably: Wear shoes and clothing suitable for the outdoors, and bring water if it’s warm.  We can even have a cuppa if the mood takes us.

Walking therapy isn’t for everyone, but for many, it offers a refreshing, down-to-earth way to explore thoughts and feelings while moving through the world. If you’re curious, I’d be happy to chat and help you see if it could be a fit for you.
